Le nom est porté dans la Haute-Loire et dans les départements voisins (07, 42). On trouve la variante Cuoc dans l'Aveyron. C'est un terme qui désigne un cuisinier, variante de l'ancien occitan "coc" (du latin "coquus"). Le même nom existe en Italie sous les formes Cuoco et Cuoci (Campanie), Cuoghi (Émilie-Romagne), Coco, Lo Coco (Sicile).
